At Gettysburg
by Ashley Fox Linton & Will Collyer
Based on a true story, “At Gettysburg” is the eyewitness account of 15-year-old girl, Matilda Pierce.
“Tillie’s” innocence is shaken in those three days of the the bloodiest battle of the Civil War in her 1.7 square mile hometown, with 50,000 casualties.
When the Gettysburg battle begins, her house is in the middle of the battle, so she evacuates with her young neighbors to a nearby farm where wounded soldiers are brought and the dead are discarded.
She sees how conflicting ideals can turn to violence and worries about her two older brothers fighting in the battle.
Her crush on a soldier turns out not to be as sweet as it seems and she wrestles with controversial questions about the human cost of war.
She ultimately finds unexpected courage, gains the respect of high ranking officers and becomes something of a hero.
Like “The Diary of Anne Frank,” this is an intimate window into a horrific historical event that was a turning point for the world.
